The story behind the poster

The Brouwersgracht combined homes, warehouses and transport by water. Historical photographs informed the façades around the Bergen and Tromsoe warehouses. The main original reference dates from 1936. An older photograph was later identified as a work by George Hendrik Breitner, dated 1902–1908, showing the same recognisable façades, names and chimney.

The canal’s history goes back to the city’s late-sixteenth-century expansion. Stadsherstel describes its construction in 1585 as a connection between new canals inside the Haarlemmerdijk. Its name refers to local breweries, supplied with grain, hops and peat by water. Warehouses and loading places in old photographs belong to this long history of waterside work.

This comparison supports the setting’s pre-war character. Morning light, people, cargo, a loading opening and the water level were composed for the illustration, creating a quiet impression without assigning every detail to one documented year.
