Scheveningen
Kurhaus and boulevard
The Kurhaus looks out over a lively beach. Waves, beach chairs and a walk along the water bring memories of a day by the sea a little closer.

The story behind the poster
The Kurhaus tells the story of Scheveningen’s rise as a seaside resort. Jacob Pronk opened a wooden bathhouse in 1818; the monumental Kurhaus followed in 1885. Hotels and entertainment attracted growing numbers of visitors, and the Wandelhoofd Wilhelmina pier opened in 1901.
The resort developed in stages. A municipal bathhouse replaced the wooden building in 1828. Seaside visits gradually combined health, leisure and entertainment. The pier opened in 1901 was 300 metres long, making a walk above the sea another part of a day in Scheveningen, alongside the beach and coastal hotels.
This poster imagines a fresh day at the beach with the Kurhaus as its focal point. The historical pier was deliberately omitted to give the composition more space. Clouds, flags and visitors were composed for the illustration.
